Giving in the Arab region is not a new phenomenon, but rather the new development within the last ten years is a shift towards being more engaged and involved in the giving process. People have a vested interest in the direction of funds as well as the desire to be involved somehow. Within that context falls corporate social responsibility (CSR) which has been building momentum in the region. It is no longer considered the exception, but rather an integral part of the corporate image and the operation of businesses. One result of this momentum is different models of CSR which create an opportunity for people to give in different capacities according to their desires. The goal is to bring value to all the types of models and capitalize on the best.

Unlike other regions of the world, the phenomenon of CSR, foundations, donations, and philanthropy did not gain real momentum in the Arab region until the 1990’s.Three deficient areas need to be addressed as follows: Firstly, there is a need for stronger technical support which translates into transparency, effective systems, and the values behind philanthropy. Secondly is the need for effective policy structures. Thirdly, there is a need for a networking structure among all of the foundations.

The Arab Foundations Forum (AFF) was established out of the need for a networking structure of foundations. In the short term, the forum would provide a platform for dialogue among the various foundations in this region as well as the rest of the world. It would also serve as an advocate for more effective principles, practices, programs, and policies. Its initiatives also include bringing philanthropists together to share information, learn from, and support one another.
